Justin Herbert started his career with two seasons around 23 PPR points per game, which is unheard of for a player that early in their career who isn’t primarily a rushing quarterback. Part of his success was volume, as no quarterback dropped back to pass more often than Herbert over those two seasons. His passing grade was in the top 10 among quarterbacks. He threw a touchdown on at least 5% of his passes both years, and had over 7.0 yards per attempt each year.

The Chargers started the season as the most run-heavy team, running 51% of the time while the league average was 40%. Herbert was not playing well and was only averaging 11.3 fantasy points per game. The Chargers massively changed their run rate, going down to 38.1%, and Herbert averaged 19.4 PPR points per game over the last two-thirds of games.

Greg Roman had one of the most run-heavy offenses during his time with the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens. The Los Angeles Chargers were balanced last season, but added two new running backs, which will likely lead them to run the ball more this season.
